Crowns are used to restore
a tooth when it is damaged or unsightly.
They can give a dramatic improvement in
the cosmetic appearance of someone's smile.
Many people have one or more crowns on
their back teeth where a tooth has become
heavily filled and eventually needs a stronger
more durable restoration. Many people also
have a crown or crowns on their front teeth.
Many of these crowns are poor and do not
at all blend in or enhance the smile -
they should! They should be invisible or
nearly invisible.
Most crowns on front
teeth are now made entirely of very hard
porcelain. Occasionally they are still
made with porcelain bonded to a thin
thimble of precious metal underneath. These
crowns are called bonded crowns. Unfortunately
if they are not done well they may show
an unsightly greyness or grey line at
their margin near the gum line.
