Fillings
Fillings are an all too common experience for
most people. A huge beneficial impact has been
made across all sectors of the population by
Fluoride containing toothpastes which were first
introduced in the early 1960's. We do not now
see the levels of decay in children or adults
that we saw even 25 years ago. The average 23
year old has only three fillings. Many of the
children and adolescents we see have no fillings
at all, which is fantastic.
Many people mistakenly believe that avoiding
decay is all about brushing. This is only partially
true. The most important influence on levels
of decay is in fact diet. The amount and frequency
of refined sugar in the diet is the deciding
factor. As a rule of thumb the aim should be
to avoid sweet snacks or fizzy drinks between
mealtimes. Using Fluoride toothpaste also is
of course important.
Depending on the extent of the decay and the
size of the cavity we have many different ways
and materials to restore the tooth.
